Best places to dive in Bali

Bali is an island of 5637 km2 on which there are more than two dozen dive sites that delight divers of all levels.
Diving spots in Bali are varied (wreck, reef, with or without current, etc.) and the visibility is excellent, which guarantee you a unique experience to discover species such as Manta rays, sunfishes (mola mola), barracudas, scorpion fishes, and many others.

Diving spots in Bali are divided into 3 main areas:

  • North of Bali (Padang Bai, Candidasa Tulamben, Amed)
  • South of Bali (Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan).
  • North West of Bali (The island of Menjangan, Gilimanuk and Lovina)

North of Bali:

Tulamben Bay

If you decide to dive in the Tulamben bay, you will explore the wreck of « USAT Liberty » (a ship torpedoed in 1942 by a Japanese submarine) that houses a great biodiversity. Towed from Lombok to Tulamben, the Liberty wreck is suitable for beginners and experienced divers as the wreck is between 6 and 28 meters deep and the current is very low.
You can discover Napoleons, humpback parrotfishes, moray eels, barracudas, pygmy seahorses, leaf fishes, scorpion fishes, and many more.

Coral Garden

The garden is situated right next to the wreck of the USAT Liberty. The reef is composed of various types of corals (soft and rigid) to a depth of 2 to 25 meters, with a current between nonexistent to moderate, depending on tides.
You will discover a rich and varied fauna, like the beautiful blue-yellow ribbon moray eel, angelfishes, bumphead parrotfishes, triggerfishes, reef fishes, to name a few. You may be lucky enough to also see reef sharks and octopus.

South of Bali

The dives in the south of Bali, on the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, are accessible by boat, They are rather recommended for experienced divers because the current is more strong there. The South of Bali is best known for sheltering Mola Mola (Sunfish) from July to October in Crystal Bay and Manta rays all year, in Manta Point.

North-west of Bali

Menjangan Island

The island is located in the North-west of Bali, at 2hours and a half boat ride from Amed. It is one of the most famous destinations of Bali. The coral reef is protected and therefore proposes a lush fauna and flora. The visibility is excellent all year. Moreover, the spot has vertiginous drop offs (between 30 and 60 meters) where you can meet a multitude of species like whale sharks, enormous sea fans, reef fishes, etc. On Garden Eels, you will discover an unusual concentration of eels. Experienced divers will have the opportunity to visit the wreck « Anker Wreck » (150 years old), located at 40 meters deep.

A diving spot accessible to all, offering a visibility to 10 meters. The reef is near the beach and begins at 10 meters depth to fall to 20 meters. It is a spot that will delight underwater photography enthusiasts.
In Lovina, you can see the blue starfish, surgeon fishes, parrot fishes, lion fishes and other many species.

A very good place for macro and muck dive enthusiasts. With a depth less than 10 meters, this bay is a great place to practice muck dive as there are no coral reefs but only sand (volcanic black sand), sheltering a multitude of species.

Bali is a paradise for divers, beginners or experienced, to validate a diploma or for discovery dives. Wherever you dive, you will be amazed by the richness of the sea bed and by the diversity of species.
